Stephen McIlwaine joins AMS as Audit Partner to lead Aberdeen expansion

Stephen will lead our north-east audit offering as we build a £5 million regional audit business over the next three years.

We're delighted to welcome Stephen McIlwaine to our Aberdeen leadership team as Audit Partner. His appointment is a key step in our ambition to build a £5 million regional audit business in the north-east within the next three years.

Stephen joins from Johnston Carmichael, where he spent more than 13 years advising energy, manufacturing and construction clients and led the firm's Aberdeen Financial Reporting practice. At AMS, he will lead our north-east audit offering, supporting Infinity Partnership clients and our wider client base.

Stephen's appointment follows our acquisition of Infinity Partnership in May, which gave us a strong platform to accelerate our £20 million Scottish growth plan. That plan includes creating up to 200 jobs across Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow. As our Aberdeen audit offering develops, we expect to build a local team of around 25 people.

With the backing of a wider group generating £40 million in annual revenue, this investment reflects our long-term commitment to building scale, capability and senior advisory depth in Scotland.

Supporting businesses through change

Demand for audit expertise is growing as Aberdeen's economy undergoes significant change, particularly in energy. Businesses are restructuring and diversifying while facing increasingly complex reporting and compliance requirements.

Steven Fraser, Regional Managing Partner at AMS, said: "Stephen is well established in Aberdeen's business community and embodies the trusted, senior-led approach we want AMS to be known for in Scotland. His appointment strengthens our audit capability and gives clients direct access to experienced local leadership."

Stephen McIlwaine said: "Aberdeen businesses are navigating significant change, particularly across energy, manufacturing and construction. AMS has the ambition, backing and client base to build a strong audit team here, and I'm excited to help lead that growth."

Simon Cowie, founder of Infinity Partnership and now Aberdeen Managing Director at AMS, said: "Stephen's appointment is a clear signal of the investment AMS is making in Aberdeen. His experience and local reputation add real strength to our audit proposition and confidence for clients as we scale."
